Is your Sony a7iii acting a bit weird or are there some things that annoy you? Sometimes, updating to the latest firmware fixes a lot of weird quirks and bugs.

In order to not waste your time, the instructions are summarized below. If you want more detailed steps, or just want to read more “fluff”, feel free to keep scrolling.

Quick Steps

  1. Set USB Connection to “Mass Storage” (Menu –> Setup4)
  2. Connect camera to PC/Mac via a USB-C cable

Detailed Steps

If you’d rather read a more detailed walkthrough, here you go.

Step 1

To start off, we need to change a particular setting in our Sony a7iii’s menu.

  1. Hit the menu button on the rear of the camera
  2. Go to the fifth tab (suitcase icon)
  3. Go to the 4th page (Setup4)
  4. Open “USB Connection” settings
  5. Select “Mass Storage”

What this does is it tells the camera to allow file transfers when plugged in (which is, of course, what we need to install the firmware update).

Step 2

Next, we’re going to connect the camera to our PC/Mac with a simple USB-C cable. Any USB-C will work, and there’s thousands of options if you don’t own one already.

Plug one side into your computer, and plug the other end of the cable into your camera. The a7iii’s USB port is located on the left side near the bottom of the body.

Step 3

After that, we’re going to download the latest firmware update from Sony’s website. You’ll have to agree to the terms and conditions and jump through a few different pages.

After it’s downloaded, run the program/installer.

Step 4

After the installation program is open on your computer, just keep hitting next and following the steps until it’s done.

Finally, check to make sure that your Sony a7iii is properly updated.

  1. Hit the menu button on the rear of the camera
  2. Go to the 5th tab (suitcase icon)
  3. Page over to “Setup7”
  4. Open “version” and make sure it matches what you downloaded

Conclusion

That’s all there is to it! Updating firmware is incredibly easy, and you should occasionally check to see if there’s new updates for your camera.
